2022 FIFA World Cup Predictions – Match 64

After a frantic month of football, and a strong Croatian victory overnight to see them claim a second podium finish in as many World Cups, Qatar 2022 has come to an end. From a social/political standpoint, it’s been exactly as much of a disaster – perhaps even more so – as it was tipped to be, but it’s been a very strong set of games and if people ignore the context, it will be remembered fondly.

In a distraction from the horrible scenes in Melbourne today, the third place match at the World Cup takes place at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan. A match that is often derided, regularly ignored, and is no longer played at the continental level in some cases, it would nonetheless still be worth bringing to your trophy cabinet – especially for Morocco, who would be the first African or Arab country to achieve the feat.

As the commentators noted ahead of the game, Argentina has a perfect record in World Cup semi-finals, and they kept that streak alive in an emphatic victory over Croatia at the Lusail Iconic Stadium. Two goals in the first half put the Argentines in cruise control – one a Lionel Messi penalty, the other a stunning run from Julián Álvarez – and they were able to ease into a victory with a third in the second.

2022 FIFA World Cup Predictions – Match 61

We’re truly at the tail end now, with just two games remaining for World Cup glory for these teams. Our first game is between two countries that lack a history between each other (although some might differ), and two countries that have gotten to this stage recently (having played in the last two finals). However, neither Argentina nor Croatia have won the World Cup recently, with their last titles coming in 1986 and never respectively.

2022 FIFA World Cup Predictions – Matches 57 and 58

It’s been a much needed break after the round of 16, which gives both fans and players time to breathe and take in what we’ve seen in a pretty good tournament so far. We’ve been lucky enough that most of the teams we expected to reach this stage are set up for what should be an excellent set of quarter finals across two different days.

The knockout stages are on trend, with the expected results coming in each game so far, and even the closeness of the games being roughly proportionate. Japan’s clash against Croatia looked to be the closest match, and the fact that it’s the only one that’s gone to extra time and later penalties bears that out – Japan were a strong team throughout the first half, but Croatia resisted and found their feet as the game went on, dominating the penalty shootout after both of Japan’s first two were saved.

As great as the group stage was, it was inevitable that we’d have to come back down to earth at some point, and neither of today’s games are going to be long remembered. France easily defeated Poland in the earlier game, a goal to Olivier Giroud just before half time giving Les Bleus the lead and a brace from Kylian Mpabbe ensuring their progress (though not without a farcical penalty to Poland in the very last moments).

2022 FIFA World Cup Predictions – Matches 51 and 52

In what was the first of a few more unusually slept nights for us, we saw two predictable but no less interesting Round of 16 matches, between teams expected to go far and teams who’d already matched expectations. The Netherlands were comfortably the better team against the United States and moved to an unremarkable 3-1 victory, with the more even game being the second – despite being down on xG at half time, 0.06 to 0.07, Argentina went into the break with a 1-0 lead over Australia thanks to some Lionel Messi brilliance.
