Tonight, we move into a strange new world for FIFA and World Cup football. Having been timed conveniently enough to not be disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 World Cup kicks off at the shiny new Al Bayt Stadium in northern Qatar. While it’s an interesting development to have a major sporting event hosted in the Middle East (not counting last year’s cricket T20 World Cup), everything about the impending tournament is a shambles for many reasons.
